"Energizing" " isn't a word that leaps to mind when describing a visit with your doctor. But this man isn't your average doc.

A man affectionately referred to by a fellow doctor as "superhuman," James Rouse, N.D., talks with such verve and such conviction in complementary healthcare, you come away feeling inspired to take better care of yourself -- and to enjoy your life more.

Known as "Dr. James" to patients and colleagues, James is a naturopathic physician, healthcare consultant to broadcast news stations, Ironman triathlete, certified yoga instructor, author and chef. He earned his medical degree at the National College of Naturopathic Medicine, one of only handful of accredited naturopathic medical schools in the country, whose program integrates training in pharamacology and other "Western" treatment methods with intensive study in botanical, nutritional, homeopathic and other holistic approaches. His diverse healthcare training and studies also include psychology, acupuncture, traditional Chinese medicine, and ayurvedic medicine.

James is best known for his "Optimum Wellness" TV segment series, which he hosts on NBC affiliate channels in cities including Los Angeles and Seattle as well as in the Denver area, where he lives with his wife Debra and their two daughters. He has written several books including NutriSystem Nourish: The Revolutionary Weight-Loss Program; Grow Your Life from Average to Amazing and Gaiam's Health Solutions for Stress Relief and Health Solutions for Sleep.

For a time, Dr. James owned and operated an organic foods restaurant in the Seattle area, and frequently recommends recipes based on his creations in the restaurant and his knowledge and interest in the power of nutrition in the chemistry that supports the body's natural healing and immune systems.

Dr. James recently launched the Mix 1 line of "all-natural fast food" bottled drinks, partnering with Izze bottled-soda company founder Greg Stroh to create a blend of nutrients with a balance of carbs and protein to give people all-day energy.
